I think the cover alone sets the reader up for the expectation that Harriet Tubman needs no man by her side to become free.
The first chapter is a flashback to Harriet’s time with her husband John. We already seen Harriet’s fierce independence when she leaves her husband to purse a better life for herself and her child. I think this story will be filled with heartbreak and turmoil, but it’s also hopeful since we know the outcome.
I think the writing is beautiful but ultimately, this plot isn’t for me. I have a difficult time reading slavery related stories.
