The cover drew me in, and the fact that it features Harriet Tubman piqued my interest as well. Reading the sample further intrigued me because Tubman is such an imposing historical figure that we can forget her humanity. This excerpt highlighted her vulnerability and really humanized her character. It also touched on several main tenets of slavery right out of the gate, which I appreciated. Well-done historical fiction instructs by adhering to factual experiences while adding a layer of inventive creativity.
