Harriet Tubman's story is a staple of middle-grade fiction and narrative non-fiction, at least in my memory, and it's nice to see an adult fictionalization of some of her work. The author has certainly put in research for the dialect used by the other character featured in this excerpt, something that I applaud even if it makes it a slower reading experience. My middle grade understanding of Tubman's life, supplemented by a visit to the Harriet Tubman Home in upstate New York, skimmed over her work during the Civil War, so this is an exciting opportunity to look at an episode I know nothing about.
