While this author has a history with well written historical fiction novels, I do tire of white authors telling the stories of people of color, especially those of importance in history. I just feel like we never get the true story. What we do often get is stereotypes and white-washing of history. I especially didn't appreciate the colloquialism the author utilized. When an such as Zora Neale Hurston makes use of it, she is genuinely demonstrating how the people she knows, the people of her community, speak. When a white author, who did not live during that time and didn't witness such language, does it, it feels stereotypical. I'm just being honest. I'm tired of white-washed history. And while I think it super interesting that this focuses on Harriet Tubman's role during the Revolutionary War, I just wish someone else was telling the story. Maybe then I would feel like I'm getting the whole truth.
