Being introduced to Harriet Tubman is like being introduced to a moment in history. In reading just the first chapter of Elizabeth Cobbs' novel, "The Tubman Command", I am drawn into the moment of history where slaves are fighting for their freedom and America is struggling to define itself. Families are pulled apart and many people die fighting for what they believe in their heart to be honest and right. Strong morals and human rights are at the very center of the issue.

Harriet is an independent woman who will not be complacent when she sees and experiences suffering. She runs away to fight for what she knows is right and true and is willing to give anything to support the cause.

My first impression of this novel is that the story reads well and is not too overly historical in content. I was captivated from the beginning. The cover of the book is also attractive and eye catching in red, grey and black.

I can't wait to read the rest of this novel and find out how Harriet's life unfolds.
