Jake Livingston is a medium. He sees ghosts repeating their death loop wherever he goes. He’s also one of the only Black students at St. Clair Prep. His medium life gets progressively worse when the ghost a boy becomes fixated on Jake. Sawyer Doon has plans for Jake.

This book is all the things! A closeted, gay black boyfriend would have enough struggles without adding the whole β€œsees ghosts in a death loop” thing. I cannot imagine how annoying that must be. These death loop scenes added some gore to this book, that I wasn’t entirely expected in a YA. If you love horror but are holding back because you think YA horror will be tame, fear not friend. *There was an insect scene I had to skim because that is my nightmare, and I cannot.*

Sawyer Doon, our villainous ghost, was a school shooter in life killing six teens before taking his own life. Douglass shares Sawyer’s story too through journal entries. His journal entries are very dark. I was unable to drum up much empathy, because he killed six teens and then KEPT GOING IN THE AFTERLIFE!!! BUT, I am always here for journal entries.

There are a lot of dream like scenes in The Taking of Jake Livingston. Jake venture in to the dead world periodically, and I found myself getting lost. These scenes are very chaotic.

This was a quick but powerful horror read. It deals with a lot of hard topics and could be triggering. CW: homophobia, micro aggressions, abuse, sexual assault.

If you like horror make sure you pick up The Taking of Jake Livingston on July 13th! It is going to be perfect for spooky season. Thank you to Bookishfirst and Putnam for my review copy!
