If you're looking for a solid ghost story, this is definitely one right here. I'm not much of a fan of horror, and this book didn't change my mind or anything, but it was a well-written quick read that gave a nice look at a Black queer experience in the context of an actual ghost story. The story touches on themes about race, sexuality, and mental health really well, and there are definitely some suspenseful moments to keep the story interesting. For me personally I didn't feel as strong of a connection to any of the characters as I would have wanted. In general I liked Jake as a protagonist and he was interesting enough to follow – a teenage medium with family issues and self-esteem issues? Definitely makes for some interesting moments. But this did feel a little bit more like a genre story than a character driven story to me, a lot of the side characters weren't super fleshed out or all that interesting for my tastes. This story is also one where the protagonist fights evil ghost. We get an interesting look into the ghost's point of view which helps to give him some depth, but in the end it's a simple good guy versus evil villain story. Not super complex, but an effectively told story. Overall I think if the premise sounds interesting to you, it's definitely worth a read.
