This book is so good! I raced through it because I wanted to know what would happen next. Jake is interesting right from the first page. He's black, gay, and sees dead people's last moments. He's self-aware, filled with much of the self-doubt that plagues others his age, and trying to find his place in a school where he feels like a token and faces constant racism. In spite of hitting so many talking points, this book is well-written and worth reading. It doesn't read like someone's political statement in fictional form, like so many stories ticking these same boxes do. Jake feels real and warm, and I'd love to give him a hug and tell him everything will be okay. The horror part of the story doesn't take away from Jake's realness as a young man trying to find his place in the world.

The cover art is great and captures a lot of what I felt about Jake as I was reading.
