I think there was definitely some more room for improvement, especially when it comes to the romance. I would have loved for it to be longer and would have been willing to read the extra pages if it was more fleshed out. I will say that the book was quite confusing. It was creepy though, which is a plus. Some of the descriptions were harder to understand but I got the general gist. It was delightful to see jake's character develop throughout the novel, although some of it might have happened despite his plans, I enjoyed the book regardless. I don't have much experience with queer and black stories, but this was a great first introduction. Sawyer was an excellent antagonist, and his characterization was deep enough that you could sympathize with him but still disagreed with his actions. In my opinion, the real villain in the narrative was Chad.
