I think Ryan Douglass has a lot of potential as a writer. The horror elements were creepy and there were honestly moments that I shuddered from the imagery. I also appreciated that the main character was a queer, black, teen boy, as I can't really remember any other horror novels that feature that demographic of character. Jake's mental health decline was also done really well, and by the climax, I could see how things worked out the way they did.

I don't think it's a fantastic book--to me, it's a little too short, a little too choppy of writing. I also struggled a lot with the antagonist as a school shooter and getting in his head. The relationship between Allister and Jake happened pretty quickly, and I found myself not particularly interested in that development.

I would absolutely read something else Ryan Douglass writes, as again, I think he has a ton of potential and I would like to see him develop as a horror writer.
