This book has a very Christoper Moore feel too it. Very tongue in cheek and absurdist. I believe the hazy and often jumpy style of writing is intentional, meant to throw readers off kilter in a similar manner to as our main character Sebastian. However, that being said, the world building was not there for me in this snippet. It was very hard to get a complete sense of what the world or even each building was truly like. So much time was spent creating an absurdist reality that any true description of a place was lost. We bounced around between the music shop, Sebastian's home/workshop, a phone booth and a new sushi shop without any indication of the relation of those places to one another, without really any indication of what the outside world looks like or what the outside of even the buildings look like. Also, I have no idea how this culture functions. I know drugs, music, and sex are central, but not much more than that.
I guess overall I just feel from my initial read that this book is trying to hard to be both a commentary and a comedy with snippets like "A man doesn’t like it when his fish is inferior to another man’s." *insert eye roll* However, for fans of Christoper Moore this may be perfect. Though I still say the world building could use a bit more attention.
