Light on the actual scripture

Despite being billed as a Christian devotional, it seems to be a bit light on the spiritual side of things, weighted far more heavily towards the authors own musings about life and personal experiences. I see how they reference trusting God and praying for guidance, etc., but beyond the token verse at the opening it doesn't seem to point to any deep spiritual disciplines. It reads more as a generic self-help book with a light dusting of faith-based sprinkles on top.
