The Sunbearer Trials is a Mexican mythology inspired story about teen demigods or semidioses. The Sun's power needs to be replenished every ten years, because Sol the sun god needs energy to keep the evil Obsidian Gods away. Sol chooses ten semidioses that he finds worthy between the ages of thirteen and eighteen. The winner receives the honor of bearing the light and life to each temple in the region, but the loser must sacrifice their life to replenish the sun's powers. Teo, a trans Jade semidios, does not have to worry so much since traditionally only Gold semidioses are chosen for the trials. However, Sol has other plans during these trials, as they pick not one, but two Jade semidioses, Teo included. Who will be the Sunbearer?

I've read Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas, so I was super excited to see them write another book. I also love that this book is inspired by Mexican mythology, because I am a sucker for mythology. The characters are wonderful, and the LGBTQ representation is out of this world. I want to visit Reino del Sol so badly now. It is filled with action, acceptance, and an imaginative fantasy world.

I highly recommend this for people who like mythology and lush fantasy worlds.
