I think the cover conveys the genre (science fiction/fantasy), and also is eye-catching. It seems to feature Teo, a teen Jade semidiós and the trans son of the goddess of birds. All the green makes sense given that Teo's a Jade. On the cover, he's holding a glowing skull.
The first look lays the groundwork for the novel, giving the background on Sol as well as introducing the reader to Teo and the Sunbearer Trials, "a competition of the very best semidioses that kept the sun fueled and ensured the safety of their world for the next ten years."
