The Sunbearer Trials reminds me of if the Hunger Games met Hercules. Teo is a semi-god attending (and maybe participating in?) the Trials on behalf of his territory. Overall, the writer does a great job of setting the scene for the world Teo lives in and the imagery of a bird-loving territory is beautiful.
The setting of the story in Mexico adds an interesting cultural element that I feel nuanced the story. I also appreciated the queer and trans representation amongst the characters. Overall very modern and enjoyable!
