Maybe this book takes a turn for the better, but the beginning of it feels like a cheesy Central American knock-off of the Hunger Games. The mythology at the start of the book feels confusing. The boy who can talk to birds – and uses this skill to recruit several to help him deface property – just feels silly. Maybe it’s a skill that helps him in the games later, but it doesn’t really make me like him at the start of the book.
