Sixteen year old Maria has just escaped from a work camp in July 1944. She is making her way back home to find her family when she comes across an injured boy just older than herself. In a hasty decision she decides to help save the boy's life, and begins a new story for both of them.
This was a wonderful historical fiction story from a different story point than I have read before. I loved reading about Kostya and Maria's back-stories and following along on their journey. Even Tomek's unique character role was very riveting. I did feel like there should have been a bit more about Tomek's story since the book's title was based after him. Also, the ending felt very sudden and incomplete. I felt like I was only three quarters of the way into the story when it ended. It seemed like it was building up to the ending, but it was the ending. So other than needing more story, it was a wonderful read!
