I love historical fiction especially when it teaches me something new along with telling me a riveting story. This book managed to introduce me to an aspect of WWII that I was not familiar with- the struggles between Poland, Russia, and the Ukraine. I was so interested that I wanted more depth than a typical YA novel could really deliver.

What it does deliver is a suspense filled ride that you can easily read in a couple of hours and a strong, flawed character in Maria that you won't soon forget. Her journey is filled with peril and the type of choices that test you- as well as a few too many well timed coincidences. I might have been a bit kinder in my assessment of the book if the ending had not been so abrupt that it was jarring. I was so surprised to find that the remaining pages were a character list (which would have been much more helpful in the front) rather than an epilogue.

I would absolutely read another book by this author. More pressing though is my desire to read more about this aspect of WWII.
