Thought provoking historical fiction that'll make you wonder, but why are they the enemy?
Even though I just received this book yesterday, I've already flown through it because I couldn't put it down. I've read dozens of books set during World War II but this one was unique because it took place in Poland and focused on Polish and Ukranian characters. Typically, books during this era are set in Britain, France, or Germany. With Russia's current attack on Ukraine, I found this story especially timely and intriguing. With Poland and Ukraine at odds, an unlikely bond forms between Maria and Kostya, who should be enemies since one Polish and one Ukranian. Instead, their tie made them wonder, but why are we enemies? This is my first book by this Young Adult adult, but I will definitely be searching her back log.
If you're looking for another unique WWII setting, I would highly recommend THE GIRL THEY LEFT BEHIND by Roxanne Veletzos because it's set in Bucharest, Romania.
I received an advance copy of this book from BookishFirst. All opinions are my own.
