Solid Book
Historical fiction usually isn't for me considering the often insensitive depictions of real events, specifically war. But I strongly feel as if The Silent Unseen handled such serious subjects in an appropriate way while maintaining an engaging story.
The characters were well-written and I particularly liked how they weren't acting or speaking like adults, after all they're just kids forced to experience such a difficult time. The incorporation of language barriers and family separation were also aspects I appreciated for illustrating the realities of war.
Prejudice is the driving theme of this novel and I think it did a great job demonstrating how it can be overcome, not in a matter of seconds or days, but after we learn about each other. It took time, but eventually the characters embraced their differences in a heartful manner.
