Highly suspenseful and immersive historical fiction
Such a highly intriguing story right from the start. The author easily creates a very tangible and frightening backdrop of historical events. Which is compounded by how eerily timely it is reading this through the lens of current word affairs. There is a real palpable sense of urgency, fear, hope and love on every page.
This is definitely one that I’d recommend for historical fiction lovers. The focus within World War II on an oft overlooked region and people was eye opening and pushed me to find the real stories that inspired this book.
Overall this is a gripping and highly enjoyable read. The pacing was fairly fast with fear and the constant threat of death around every corner. Once I started it I just couldn’t put it down! Being written in dual perspective gave a great sense of the characters, motivations, time and place.
