This book was so amazing!! Told in dual perspective from both Maria and Kostya, this historical fiction read is a gripping story from two different sides of a complicated war. It is set in Poland during July 1944 and follows Maria, a 16 year old returning home after 3 years served in Nazi Germany labor camp. Returning home, she discovers her town has been destroyed and her parents killed in a war between Polish Resistance and Ukrainian Nationalists. When her brother Tomek also goes missing, Maria has no choice but to leave her trust in her sworn enemy, Ukrainian born Kostya in order to find him.

It is being advertised as a YA novel but is also a wonderful read for adult readers, as well! At 320 pages, this is a quick read that leaves a whole lot of impact. It's enjoyable, the characters are all well-developed and the pacing is fantastic!

This book deserves to get so much attention right now--especially with what is currently happening in Ukraine. This book carries a lot of insight and history of the country. It not only taught me a lot about a different perspective from WWII but also left me with a feeling of hope and connection.

I rated this book at 4.5 stars only because I was a bit disappointed with the abrupt ending but, overall, this book was a win for me!
