This is one of those First Looks where the tension is palpable right from the start. We are introduced to two characters who have struggled in their own ways, and have opposing goals. But I know that they're ultimately going to be forced to work together. It's a dark story, set towards the end of WWII in Soviet-occupied Poland, and everyone seems to be caught between the Germans, the Russians, and both Polish and Ukrainian partisans. While most of my WWII reading has been focused on memoirs from Holocaust survivors, this makes me more intrigued to learn about the countries that my family left ages ago.
