This book has been popping on must-read lists everywhere for quite some time now. I had it on hold for MONTHS with my library before finally the fateful day came when I got my turn to read it! So this story follows a psychotherapist treating a particularly intractable patient who has been found insane while on trial for her husband (or something along those lines, I don't think England has the same system we do, but that is how it would translate to the American system I believe). So this book was full of twists and turns all of the way through. I found myself questioning every last bit of what I thought I knew about the story all the way through. It also doesn't hurt that I work in mental health so I always love when mental health is well portrayed in a book. In that manner, I felt the author did a lovely job at portraying kind of the blandness of what was ultimately a state hospital and the priorities they push on the staff to be as cheap as possible. Also, I found it a relatively quick read to get through and had trouble putting it down.

The only reason it is getting four stars from me instead of five is after finishing the book, I found myself struggling to have a favorite character. I didn't particularly like any of the characters. I found myself angry at them and even hating some of them at times, but never did I really find myself cheering for any of them. Now, whether that is writing style or that is my cynicism showing is a matter of debate.
