Alicia Berenson was found guilty of shooting and killing her husband. After the crime, Alicia never talks again and is placed in a psych hospital. The only clue to what Alicia might be feeling after the murder is a painting she paints (Alicia is a famous painter and her husband Gabriel was a fashion photographer). The story is told through the perspective of Theo, Alicia’s therapist at the hospital who recently started his job and is eager to find out what happened the day of the killing. It alternates to entries in Alicia’s diary from the weeks leading up to that day.

I read a lot of reviews of this book prior to reading it and knew that the book relied heavily on a big twist. I sort of wish I went into this one totally blind because I did guess part of the twist before it happened which took away from that big “a-ha” moment.. That being said, the book does an excellent job of introducing a lot of shady characters to make the reader keep guessing what could have happened. It’s fun to try to think of the most outlandish ending that could happen and try to make a way for that to work.

The book talks about psychology which is a fascinating subject to me. It also talks about the art world and what it’s like to be an artist, which I’m not really familiar with. The beginning of the book didn’t fully hold my interest, but as it goes on it got better and better, leading up to the grand finale.

I may be being a bit critical because it takes a lot for me to give a thriller/suspense novel 5 stars and so I gave this one a 4. It’s really more a solid 4.5 (Goodreads, half stars please?!?). I’m going to think about this book over the next week and I might come back and revise.

Overall, this should and most likely will be one of the big thrillers of 2019 and rightfully so. It’s a dark and interesting book that will keep you guessing until the end. For a debut book, the author writes like he is a seasoned professional.

Highly recommended!
