Somewhat predictable, but still surprising

I listened to this as an audiobook, so there were two narrators and they did do a fabulous job of capturing the mood of this story. The premise was intriguing for sure, and I am fascinated by psychology and what makes people suddenly snap.

I think there was a very telling moment that revealed something crucial to me that ended up playing an important part in the major plot twist. Still, I couldn't guess the whole ending of it, so that was something.

I appreciate any work that seeks to incorporate something allegorical in it. I didn't know the greek tragedy of Alcestis going into this. But I could see the distinct parallels whenever I learned it served as part of the inspiration for this.

I think Michaelides has promise, and this wasn't bad for a debut novel. I just think too many red herrings and how they were handled (not at all Agatha Christie like) could have been better. But I will check out future works by him, for sure!
