I read Alex North’s first book, The Whisper Man and enjoyed it. This one I liked even better. It has flashbacks to Paul Adam’s’ childhood when he had a pretty typical upbringing with his friends until they start spending time with Charlie Crabtree.

He’s an odd kid with hints of evil around him. Things keep getting more off and foreboding until there’s a murder in the small town and Charlie disappears.

Now Paul is all grown up and has to come back to the town he’s avoided for for decades. Why? Because not only is he visiting his mom, who is suffering from dementia, but another murder has happened.

Paul dreads coming back because he has never been totally able to move on from the horrific event that took place so many years prior and now he fears he will have to relive the past all over again. Is Charlie finally back? Where has he been all these years? Is it a copycat murder? Paul is just going to have to face his demons, the ones we all have in “The Shadows.”

So good. Gave me a really creepy vibe and that hardly ever happens with a book. Definitely no sophomore slump here!
