Initial review after reading the "first look/preview": This has a similar feel to Alex North's first book, but unlike The Whisper Man, it's got an immediate hook that just draws you into the story. I was a little hesitant to click on this one, to be honest, because The Whisper Man was a let down, for me, compared to the hype the book received. Yet, with the first look at The Shadows, not only do we have immediately engaging characters and a strong lead in, the Detective, Amanda Beck, in part 1 is far more personable than any character North has created thus far. The story flows well, and truly makes you want to keep reading. Amanda's a relatively well developed character who has both a plausible reason for doing what she does, and a likeable nature. In addition, North seems to have really grown as an author, with the setting and tone of the story quite captivating.

Review after reading the book because I made it a BOTM pick =/ : It was okay. I just don't think Alex North is for me. This is the second one I've tried and I haven't been impressed either time, so as much as I like the idea of his books, I'm not a fan of his approaches to execution. Going to let this author go - won't be picking up future books.
