The Shadows by Alex North is a decades spanning murder mystery in a small quaint English town where everyone knows everyone and all their business too. What I loved most about this (and i'm trying to avoid spoilers here) was the unexpected outcome of what had happened when main character Paul Adams was a kid. i was under a whole different impression (intentionally by the author i believe) until the end of the book.
i also enjoyed that this took place in the same area/town as The Whisper Man which meant we got a close look at Detective Amanda Beck. I hope that the next book is the same way.
North's writing is easy to follow, engaging and definitely brings the mystery and horror (especially reading alone in bed at night!)
stories like The Shadows could almost be taking out of the news pages. Kids have been and always will be up to something dangerous.
