OK, so I had to finish The Shadows asap because I desperately did not want to go to sleep for fear of having a waking dream or remembering a dream! The book follows Paul Adams as he returns to the small town he previously escaped to care for his dying mother. Though, when he returns, he's flooded with awful memories of what happened when he was a boy. Namely, the murder that he was accused of. The book flashes between then — Paul's experience as a teen befriending the creepy Charlie Crabtree who insists he can teach his friends how to kill in their dreams — and now as a new-to-town detective named Amanda who is investigating a copycat murder. Amanda, through her investigating, keeps stumbling upon horrific murders of those connected to the original case — and it all leads back to Charlie Crabtree, who hasn't been seen in 25 years and is rumored to have disappeared in the nearby woods referred to as The Shadows.
