This book was difficult for me to get into... as I was reading it, I was really just looking forward to it being over. This book revolves around Paul, back in town for the end stages of his mother’s life. He hasn’t been back to Gritten in 25 years, since he left for college.
This alternates between when Paul was in high school, and the current time, also adding in chapters from the perspective of Amanda, a detective investigating a current murder that may be linked to a crime that affected Paul in high school.
I felt like the time lines were difficult to follow, and I didn’t love the jumping around of the time lines, in this instance. It was confusing in the beginning, and really didn’t get much better for me. I didn’t connect much to the characters, and although Paul’s traumatic event was eventually revealed, it took awhile and I was already “over it”.
Although it came around a little in the end, it couldn’t overcome my terrible first impression. 3/5 stars.
