Welcome to Freakish Friday my Fabulous Firedrakes! This evening’s Gem was slipped under my door in the dead of night when there are no shadows. The Gem itself is obsidian and quite beautiful to view, but when I touched it with my talon, I shuddered. There is Death here. Cold, impenetrable, soulless.

This is Gem Maker and Dragon Feeder Alex North’s “The Shadows”. Imagine if you will that you are once again a Nest-Teen. You are in your adolescence. That time of life that should be carefree and adventurous and yet, alas, you have a friend. He is not carefree. He is odd. He doesn’t fit in. He doesn’t want to try. And then one day he does the unthinkable. He kills in a way so shocking that he and his crime become infamous. And he doesn’t just kill. He kills your other friend. How long does it take you to get back to normal? How long does it take you to get back your life? Ten years, Twenty, Thirty?

For Mr. North’s Paul Adams it takes twenty-five years. He’s moved on, as they say. He’s finally able to breathe again. This is his time now. And yet, as the saying goes, just when you thought it was safe to go back in the dungeon… yes, it happens again..

I loved this book! Alex North is a phenomenal Story Teller of Terror. “Whisper Man” had me lighting candles all night here in the cave, so I could finish his creepy tale, so with “The Shadows”, I thought I’d be smarter and start in the daytime. Not so fast, Drakon, Old Fellow, I was interrupted numerous times due to a sick puppy and road construction outside the Cave. Honestly, if the Dwarves need a new road up to their mine they could warn a Fellow, could they not? At any rate, I ended up finishing at 3AM and once again, bleary eyed I was happy I could finish. But I was watching every corner.

If you are looking for a distraction and a lovely belt of the old creepy…this one’s it! And it would make a lovely gift for that terror lover on your list.
