This book was dark, creepy, and full of twists and turns. It's been twenty-five years since Paul's friend was the victim of a ritualistic killing. One of the two killers was never found. Paul is back in town now to look after his ailing mom, and his past is back to haunt him because someone is killing again. I loved the alternating timelines, the flashbacks, and the spooky stuff that happened in this book. Some people have complained that it didn't live up to The Whisper Man, and while I did like that one better, The Shadows is by no mean a bad book. Quite the contrary. I loved the inclusion of dreams/lucid dreams as a part of the plot. It added another element of eerie to an already mysterious story. This book definitely gave me the shivers in a good way, and I recommend it if you are in the mood for something twisty and spooky. I'm looking forward to whatever Alex North writes next.
