In The Shadows horrific murders have been occurring with copycat killings and a missing murderer from the past coming back to haunt Paul Adams and his small community. Paul avoids returning to his hometown, wanting to hide the past and the memories that came with it, but when his mother falls ill he returns and is forced to confront his memories and his guilt.

I don’t read many, any, horror books, but I found myself intrigued by the popularity of Alex North’s The Whisper Man and was curious to read one of his horror/thriller/mystery novels. I found that while I did have to read this during the day time (I’m a wimp), I enjoyed the darker tone and the creepy situations that I found myself falling into. The story was gripping and mysterious and I had trouble putting it down and going about my day without wondering what was really going on in the small town, in Paul’s house, the bloody handprints, and gruesome killings. There are so many secrets, twists, and turns that provided suspense and threw me off track right when I thought I knew what was really happening. It is easy to flow through the book with a writing style that moves from description to action seamlessly, allowing the reader to get caught up with the characters as they traverse the dangers surrounding them.

I am still debating whether this is a 4 or 5 star read for me. I think the ending just threw in such a twist that I both enjoyed yet debated if it was how I wanted everything to go down. There were also some little connections that didn’t come together well for me in the end and seemed to get lost with other revelations. If you enjoy darker thrillers, unexpected plot twists, and some psychological suspense you should grab this novel! Release day July 7th!
