Thanks to my friends at Celadon Books for the Advanced Reader's Copy to read and review.

I liked this book. It was spooky and the characters were dynamic. I just felt it was way too similar to North's previous novel, The Whisper Man. I'm not sure if it's because some of the same characters/places are named or referenced, but I just didn't love this as much. *shrug*

I also didn't like the setting of Gritten too much, but that's probably by design. The town felt almost TOO creepy, like it was overly creepy and abandoned without any anchor in reality.

This novel has a lot of characters that are haunted by their past, similar to The Whisper Man. I thought how the past snuck into the present was fascinating and really well-done.

Trigger warnings for child abuse, murder.
