I read Alex North's first novel, The Whisper Man, and loved it. It was one of the best books I read last year, so I was super excited to see his new book, The Shadows. When I saw the cover for The Shadows, I was also super excited...what a great image. So incredibly creepy. I don't even need to read the blurbs, I already know I want to read this second novel.

The chapters in this excerpt DO not disappoint. Told from various points of view - a young boy, a detective and the grown up boy (Paul) - each line, paragraph and chapter are filled with a sensation of dread and unease. We know something terrible has happened, and is most likely unresolved, and that something has been haunting Paul and his mother for years. The detective, Amanda, also appears to have been haunted by something, as case she couldn't solve, trying to fill her father's shoes.

And the blood - the red handprints...yes, please, tell me more.
