The Shadows by Alex North
first look review
I was drawn right into this first look. At first, I heard ‘boy is murdered’ and it made me think of North’s other book, The Whisper Man, but this one was different. We start with a cop named Amanda Beck, who is taking her day off when she gets a call to go to a crime scene where there is a dead teenage boy and a lot of red hand prints. Then we switch to Paul, who is visiting his mother in a nursing home. He has not been home in twenty-five years, but came back because his mother is very sick. When Paul sees his mother, she tells him to get out and that there are red hand prints. Then the first look ends! Talk about cliffhanger.
I loved the cover, it is a really intriguing cover. The character introductions left me with a lot of questions that I want to unravel. So far, this seems more thriller/horror than The Whisper Man. I feel like the biggest mystery is who Alex North is. That is what I really want to know. But I also want to know: what is the connection between the murder and the mother? What was Paul doing for twenty-five years that he never visited home? What is up with Amanda hanging out at the cemetery? Is there going to be more murder? What are the handprints? Who is Alex North? (how’d that sneak in there?)
Overall, I was not excited about another Alex North book, since I liked the first one but was not in love with it. However, now I’m hooked on this one and can’t wait to read more!
