There's a strong underlying sense of foreboding throughout this excerpt of "The Shadows;" it tends to keep the reader a bit off-balance as if you think you know what's going to happen, but you really don't know at all. [And the creepy cover art just adds to the uneasiness.] Once you begin reading, it's really difficult to set this story aside; you know something's coming, but what is it? Do you even want to know?

Paul is an intriguing character and [from the book description] I'm more than curious to know just how Charlie fits into the telling of this tale. The red handprints are downright sinister, but do they have something to do with the telling of the tale or are they some sort of a red herring?

This is definitely a story to read [but probably not in a dark room] . . . .
