The Sea is Salt and So Am I is a multi perspective YA novel set in the fictional town of West Finch, Maine. From the lush description of the setting it easily brings to mind many seaside Maine towns that I actually have been to.
The main characters really shine in this book. They are charming without being cheesy and the relationship between them; Harlow, her best friend Ellis, and his twin brother Tommy, is made clear from the get go. Although throughout the book those relationships shift and morph, we always know where the characters stand with each other. As we got deeper into the book the author showed the cracks in each characters armor and their flaws shone brightly.
The writing is lyrical and very beautiful without feeling pretentious, although sometimes I feel like the author relied more on her skills to create a beautiful sentence over one with substance. This book had such a strong start, but by the end I felt like I was reading the same paragraph over and over. The ending was a little anticlimactic and abrupt, and left me feeling a bit disappointed. I'm giving The Sea is Salt and So Am I four stars because it was genuinely a pleasure to read, but the last quarter of the book was a bit tedious.

Thank you to Bookish First for gifting me a copy of this book.
