This is a story about three teenagers: Harlow, Ellis, and Tommy. Harlow is controlling, Ellis is jealous, and Tommy is depressed, but all three of them are in the midst of watching their town be swept into the ocean. Harlow and Ellis are the best of friends, and Tommy, Ellis's twin, has always been the third wheel, never exactly fitting into their lives. Tommy's attempted suicide pushes Harlow to try to save him by throwing her affections onto him, and they decide to keep their relationship a secret from Ellis and the rest of the town. However, no one can really keep a secret in a small town like West Finch. Told from each teen's POV and although beautifully written, this book was hard for me to like. I couldn't stand mopey Ellis, and found it equally impossible to like meddling Harlow. The artistic and soft Tommy was the only character I liked. I don't know if I can in good conscience recommend this book because of the awful characters, but I found some of the prose to be quotable.
