If I could choose just one word in the English language to describe this book, it would be "intertwined." And then, too elaborate just a tad further, I would say "indefinitely intertwined." The course that the author takes readers on is one to show that there will always be something at stake when we choose to merge our lives with another soul. There will be not only something at stake for us but for the other individual as well - it's unavoidable or at least the book seems to say that it is such. The lives of Harlow, Tommy, and Ellis - while at first clear - are very quickly muddied and confusing and (you guessed it) intertwined.

Beyond the above, a question to ask oneself as you are reading through, is who do I root for? who is my protagonist? is it one or is it all?

By the novel's end, I'm confident that it has to be all - otherwise who is the sea and who is I?
