The Sea is Salt and So Am I is a trip through the intense emotional experiences of three teenagers as they navigate their intertwined relationships, physical disability, severe depression, and environmental degradation.

The author expertly captures the highs and lows of mental illness. Readers should take a moment to assess their own mental health state before reading. As a reader with anxiety and depression currently in a positive mental state, I was able to relate to each characters feelings in some way throughout the story. I appreciated the range of emotions and character dimensions explored as some novels put characters with mental illness in very specific small boxes. This novel shows people with mental illness can live dynamic lives no matter what challenges they face.

I also found the environmental aspects of the novel interesting and relevant. It made me want to look further into issues of costal erosion and its effects on native animal populations and local safety and economy.
