The Sea Is Salt And So Am I is a classic young adult book that most anyone can read easily. Although, it does take a short while to become interested in the story. However, the writing style is choppy and borderline scientifically dissected which makes it difficult to continuously read the book. Though a few brilliantly crafted lines are hidden within the majority of the rougher dialogue. Every few chapters a phrase will strike you with awe at the beautiful word play Hartt employs.
One of my favorite themes of the book are the serious, ordinarily hush-hush topics in modern society discussed throughout the story. It sheds light on themes of suicide, depression, anxiety, and the brutally honest views on living in a small, sheltered town as a teenager. It speaks on the intense struggles of living as a trans-person and the rejection, hatred, and overall oppression one experiences from society.
I would recommend this book to those willing to ponder life without feeling as though they are reading a self-help book. As you read, prepare to think deeply about the meaning of life and enjoy a simple teenage take on the world.
