Please take my review with a grain of salt, as I've grown out of reading young adult novels." The Sea Is Salt and So Am I" is a book that tries very hard to do a lot. Though this is a young adult book, I appreciate how Hartt tried to make it a bit complex both symbolically and character-wise. At times, it almost felt like literary fiction. Overall, I feel that too much happens in this book for every theme and plot point to be fully explored.
I loved the rich nature element of the story. I'm a big fan of elements of nature being central to stories. The sea and the storm reflected the inner turmoil of the characters, but at times I felt that the sea almost overshadowed our characters. I didn't get to understand them as fully as I would have liked.
I did like the diversity of the characters and representations of different sexualities, disabilities, and mental illnesses. This is a book that probably would have done a lot for me when I was fourteen, but as an adult, I can't say that it did much for me.
