Not for Me

The Safe Place has all the right parts, but the pieces didn’t come together for me, and I was so bored.

I didn’t like any of the characters. Emily seemed unreasonable oblivious, all too willing to ignore all the flashing warning signs in her life. Because I couldn't connect with anyone, I also didn't care all that much about what happened to them.

Pacing is SLOW.

We have a faint sense of unease throughout, though nothing specific or intense. This line from the synopsis—”But soon Emily realizes that Scott and Nina are hiding dangerous secrets, and if she doesn’t play along, the consequences could be deadly,” doesn’t come into play until nearly the end. Up until that point, Emily is oblivious and content.

The big twist is fairly obvious to anyone who reads thrillers, and the ending felt abrupt and unfinished.
