Emily Proudman’s life can not get any worse. She is a failed actress who can not even keep her temp job as a receptionist. Her cupboard is bare and she has received an eviction notice. Scott Denny, her former boss, has thrown her a lifeline. He needs someone to act as a companion to his wife Nina and daughter Aurelia as well as acting as a caretaker for his French estate. Scott’s wife is welcoming but Aurelia has a number of health problems that make her sensitive to sunlight an being touched. She also will not speak and has occasional fits. Emily slowly begins to build a relationship with Nina and Aurelia, but there are restrictions that make no sense and the situation does not feel right. There is a gothic feel to the story as Emily begins to realize what is behind the secrets held by the Denny family. This is a suspenseful story that kept me reading late into the night.
