Emily is a naive, oblivious hot mess. Nothing is going right in her life, so when her former boss Scott asks her to go live with his wife and daughter in a secluded home in France it seems like the perfect escape from Emily's problems. And it is, until it keeps feeling to Emily like the puzzle pieces don't quite go together. Nina doesn't want her in her house, Aurelia is an unusual child, and Scott never seems to want to be there. What seems idyllic slowly starts showing secrets that make Emily wonder if she's been missing something right in front of her all along. The book is fast-paced, yet manages to slowly build up the tension as the book goes along. This is great for the reader because it lulls you into enjoying the idea of paradise before dangling the idea that everything isn't as perfect as it seems. It does fall a little short in some areas to me - not really building up the character of Aurelia and the backgrounds of Emily and Nina that make them who they are. Beyond that, this was a fun enjoyable thriller that would be a perfect beach read.
