Read Like a Romance ... Until It Didn't!

I read the first chapter of this and then was interrupted and didn't return to it until days later. In the interim, I forgot the genre of this novel and it 'almost' read like a romance ... until it didn't! Such a sharp and unexpected turn - loved it! I'm completely intrigued to learn more about this one.
