Ladee Hubbard's The Rib King is a quick page turner. My eyes do not always flow across a page so quickly, but for this one, Hubbard's writing style makes it a quick read. Each line goes faster than the last, and I found my way making it through in just over a day's time.

The novel is tagged as "an unforgettable [one] about race, class, and revenge," and it is that and more. I loved the way that Hubbard intertwined Stilwell's past as a young boy forced to escape from home with his life now in the Barclay home. While he moves up in status from groundskeeper to butler, you get the sense as the story continues to unfold that a change in his status is a battle that he can never win. The odds are always stacked against him, and he sees it as more important for himself to push others to a higher place than himself - an internal battle that he continues to fight until the novel comes to a surprise climax.
