The Rib King brings to readers the first person experience of racial disparities and the lasting trauma of generational racism. While there were definitely moments in the book that challenged my thinking and helped me understand different layers of racism I felt the characters and the storyline fell a little flat. I read another review that mentioned the first part being difficult to get through and I couldn't agree more. Once I got to the story being told by Jenny I was able to get into the book a bit more. My favorite character was Mamie and she wasn't a main character. August Sitwell opens the book and is a character throughout and yet I didn't feel like I truly understood him at the end. I needed more development.

Unfortunately I had really high hopes for this book but it didn't meet my expectations. I have a feeling I will still recommend this book to some people but wouldn't recommend to everyone.
